not your average jeans

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans? I have a horrible time finding the perfect jeans for myself. I have two pairs of custom jeans I had made for me that I like...but need to start looking for jeans again because I fell on the ice a couple weeks ago and ripped a big hole in the knees of my favorite jeans - ugh. Hmmm...maybe I should try to just make some custom jeans for myself???

For my kids I usually don't spend a lot of money on jeans because they grow out of them so quickly. But the fit isn't always the best from cheaper kids jeans, or they are too short to last very long with my growing kiddos. I never considered making jeans for them because...well...jeans look complicated.

Or so I thought.

But Titchy Threads has changed my mind about that! Laura wrote a fantastic new pattern called the Small Fry Skinny Jeans. There are tons of different options and they are easy to sew! If you want to do all the topstitching and flat felled seams they take some time to make, but the result is so worth it! I'm joining up on the Small Fry Skinny Jeans pattern tour today. You can click on any of the blog names in the image at the bottom of this post to see their jeans and get inspired to make some of your own.

I made a pair for Isa, who usually wears a size 6 in jeans from a place like Gap or Old Navy. Her waist measurement matched a size 4 for the Small Fry Skinny Jeans so I made a 4 with extra length (although I wish I would have added a bit more length - I used the size 6 length).

I actually cut up a pair of some old wide-leg jeans I had on hand. I used the original waistband from the jeans (just cut it down) and I kept the original hem. I topstitched with regular thread in most areas. Then I got an idea! A super stylish friend of mine (hi, Sarah) has a pair of jeans with wide stitching down the seams instead of regular topstitching. They almost look like they were stitched with yarn. I decided to give the look a try with these jeans by hand sewing some accent stitches using embroidery thread (2 strands are used here). It took a while to do but the result is so fun!
I added a tiny asterisk to the front coin pocket and one of the back pockets. I also tried to add a few fun details for my girl like the pretty lined pockets.
